With the UK reportedly set to experience a mini heatwave in the coming weeks, if you’re planning on spending time outdoors, now’s the time to make sure you’ve got one of the best sunscreens to hand to avoid burning and sun damage.
Official guidelines state that you should reapply your sun cream every two hours, but this isn’t particularly practical if you’re wearing a full face of make-up. Luckily there are some great SPFs on the market nowadays that can be applied seamlessly over make-up without disrupting it, to keep your safe yet still keeping your glam intact.
Google searches for ‘over make-up SPF’ typically see an increase as we step into spring and (hopefully) warmer weather, and so it’s a good idea to stock up on these spritzes and sprays now. Here are our favourites that will keep you sun safe without ruining your make-up – and even better, lots of them are currently on sale..

We think Garnier makes some of the best sunscreens on the high street, and this can should be a handbag must-have. It’s super-lightweight and looks and feels invisible on the skin, and also includes skin boosters such as vitamin E and hyaluronic acid. You’ll often find it on offer too, such as now: down from £13 to £7.80.
Ultrasun SPFs are favourites amongst beauty insiders for their tried-and-trusted formulas and high UVA ratings, and we love this mist, which is currently reduced from £22 to £17.60. The aerosol is a little more powerful than Garnier’s, giving what feels like a slightly more thorough coating, but it’s still incredibly lightweight. We love that it can be used on the scalp too, as the hairline is often forgotten about.
Australian brand Ultra Violette has successfully made sun protection cool again with its modern packaging and innovative formulas, with something for everyone (our beauty editor Laura Mulley is obsessed with its new mineral face SPF) – and this handy mist, currently reduced from £32 to £25.60, is no exception. Unlike the others here, this has a pump dispenser rather than an aerosol and a water-like consistency, and is great for dry skin.
This one is a great option for oily skin as it helps to mattify and minimise shine while also topping up your sun protection. Like a lot of La Roche-Posay products, it’s also good for sensitive skin. It’s readily available at a number of retailers, including Amazon, Boots and Lookfantastic, but the cheapest we’ve currently found it is on Escentual, where it’s £12.02.
If you’re looking for an SPF mist with some serious skincare benefits, this NIP+FAB one, priced at £29.95, gets our vote. It contains trending skincare ingredients peptides, with shoppers saying it has their faces looking “plumper and dewy“.
One from another top Aussie SPF brand, this cute mist, currently £17, not only sets make-up but also gives skin a lovely glow, and is perfect for top up. Shoppers also report how good it is for sensitive skin, saying it doesn’t irritate rosacea.
