Netflix’s Heartstopper has announced that it will return for one final feature film, much to the mixed emotions of its fans. After three successful seasons, the beloved series will wrap up the tale of Nick (portrayed by Kit Conner), Charlie (Joe Locke) and their mates.
The plot will be centred on Alice Oseman’s yet-to-be-published sixth volume of her graphic novels. With Wash Westmoreland stepping in as director, main actors Kit and Joe are branching out into new roles as executive producers.
Filming is set to kick off this summer, with creator Alice expressing: “I am completely overjoyed that we will get to tell the end of the Heartstopper story. I’m so grateful to everyone who has worked hard to make this possible and to the incredible fans of Heartstopper for your patience and passion.
“I cannot wait to bring this story to a magical conclusion.”
Sky is giving away a free Netflix subscription with its new Sky Stream TV bundles, including the £15 Essential TV plan.
This lets members watch live and on-demand TV content without a satellite dish or aerial and includes hit shows like The Last of Us and Black Mirror.
The synopsis reveals: “Nick and Charlie are inseparable, but with Nick preparing to leave for university and Charlie finding new independence at school, the reality of a long-distance relationship begins to weigh on them.
“Doubts take hold, and their relationship faces its biggest challenge yet. Meanwhile, their friends are also navigating the ups and downs of love and friendship, confronting the bittersweet challenges of growing up and moving on. Can first loves really last forever?”
Fans have taken to Reddit to voice their opinions, with many labelling it a bittersweet outcome for the show.
Fans of the series expressed both relief and concern over its conclusion, with Rex_1312 commenting: “I’m just relieved that this is being properly ended and not just dropped like so many shows before it.”
However, apprehensions were raised by aperson_72 regarding potential storyline issues: “I think this could be a really good thing since a movie kinda forces you not to meander around with so many storyline, which was my biggest issue with season 3-there was so much going on the main plot went too fast.
“But also it could be the exact opposite, if Alice tries to fit all the unresolved plotlines (Sahar and Imogen/Tori being Ace, etc.) into the movie. I think she’s gonna need to cut some of that if the movies gonna work tbh.”
Continuing with cautionary remarks about the possible execution of the movie, they said, “I know movies can fit all this on-But Alice is, to put it bluntly a pretty amateur screenwriter-she tends to overload things with plotlines, and I’m kind worried she’ll do the same thing here in a medium where that really doesn’t work.” [Sic].
Tel250 shared similar sentiments, saying: “Happy (ecstatic even) that there’s finally updates that will finally happen; sad that we will get to see much less screen time of HS content; scared/worried that this might get the Sense8 special treatment from Netflix.”
Echoing the concerns, Baxsays remarked: “OMG I’m a bit gagged because obviously a film is much shorter than a season of TV and I felt like there was definitely another season’s worth of content.
“Hoping this is a creative decision instead of something they have had to settle with for money/contract reasons that will end up seeming rushed.”
Yet, another enthusiast hailed the move as the consummate conclusion, remarking: “Honestly this is the right choice. One last big send off to such a beautiful show.”
