Hundreds of participants gathered in Thunder Bay on September 30th for the fourth annual Honouring Our Children Run, engaging in a variety of activities such as walking and running while reflecting on the significance of the day. Natalie Paavola, the CEO of Dilico Anishinabek Family Care, described the event as a vibrant display of orange around Boulevard Lake, filled with excitement, happiness, and deep emotions.
The event, initiated by Paavola four years ago, aimed to create a welcoming and inclusive community gathering that would evoke a sense of safety and togetherness. This year, the run attracted an estimated 800 to 1000 attendees, showcasing a growth in participation since its inception.
Participants had the option to partake in different running distances, including a 10 km run, a 5 km run or walk, a 5 km run specifically for school children, and a fun run for younger kids. The proceeds from the event will be directed towards the Mazinaajim Children’s Foundation, a charity founded by Dilico Anishinabek Family Care in 2009.
James Anderson, the health and wellness director at Dilico, emphasized that the run symbolizes more than just a race but also serves as a platform to recognize the importance of cultural and spiritual practices in promoting personal health and well-being. He highlighted the growing popularity of the event as a testament to the community’s commitment to reconciliation and positive change in discussions about Canadian history.
Dustin Gagné, a member of Biigtigong Nishnaabeg, expressed his joy at witnessing the enthusiastic participation and smiles on people’s faces during the event, particularly enjoying the diverse crowd in attendance. Drummers, including Gagné, provided musical accompaniment to kick off the races and walks, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Natalie Paavola encouraged individuals to embark on their own journey of truth and reconciliation at their own pace, urging them to engage in research, reading, and future participation in similar events to deepen their understanding of the significance behind such initiatives.
