The Las Vegas Aces faced an unexpected challenge from the Indiana Fever, who had several players sidelined in street clothes. Despite Kelsey Mitchell leaving the game due to severe leg cramping, the Aces appeared poised for victory, only to be met with strong resistance from Indiana.
In a hard-fought Game 5, the Aces managed to secure a 107-98 overtime win, advancing to the WNBA Finals for the third time in four years. A’ja Wilson and Jackie Young made history as the first playoff teammates to each score over 30 points, with Wilson contributing 35 points and Young adding 32.
Having clinched the league title in 2022 and 2023, the second-seeded Aces will face off against the fourth-seeded Phoenix Mercury in the best-of-seven championship series, starting on Friday. Despite a 16-game winning streak to close the regular season, Las Vegas was tested by both Seattle and Indiana in the playoffs.
Indiana, plagued by injuries, displayed remarkable resilience, with Mitchell’s departure adding to their challenges. Despite the setbacks, coach Stephanie White commended her team’s unity and perseverance, bringing them close to their first Finals appearance since 2015.
While Mitchell led the Fever with 15 points before exiting, Odyssey Sims and Natasha Howard also made significant contributions, scoring 27 and 16 points, respectively. Although Aliyah Boston tallied 11 points and 16 rebounds, she fouled out near the end of regulation.
The Aces heavily relied on Wilson and Young, with Wilson nearing her playoff career high and Young recording a playoff career-best 10 assists. Chelsea Gray, despite a brief injury scare, chipped in 17 points, including crucial points in overtime.
The Fever constantly challenged the Aces, rallying to tie the game late in regulation and force overtime. Ultimately, Las Vegas prevailed in overtime, with coach Becky Hammon praising Indiana’s resilience and determination throughout the game.
