“Canada Creates New EU Trade and Climate Role”

Must read

Prime Minister Mark Carney has established a new diplomatic role focused on enhancing trade, economic security, and addressing climate change within the European Union, as announced by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on Wednesday. John Hannaford, a former clerk of the Privy Council, will hold the newly created position of Personal Representative of the Prime Minister to the EU.

Former Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion, who currently serves as Canada’s ambassador to France and Monaco while also acting as the country’s envoy to the EU and Europe, will see a title adjustment to accommodate Hannaford’s new role. The PMO spokesperson informed CBC News that this change underscores Canada’s strong commitment to expanding and deepening its bilateral relationship with the EU.

In a statement, Prime Minister Carney expressed confidence in Hannaford’s ability to leverage his extensive experience in cultivating impactful international relationships to elevate partnerships, enhance shared security, and unlock new economic prospects benefiting Canadian workers and businesses. Hannaford brings a wealth of experience, having previously held deputy minister roles in the Departments of International Trade and Natural Resources, served as the ambassador to Norway, and acted as a defense policy adviser to the prime minister.

Dion will conclude his diplomatic duties in France, Monaco, and Brussels in January after playing a crucial role in reinforcing Canada-EU relations during a pivotal period for the country’s global partnerships.
