Russia has recently taken action to block Apple’s FaceTime app, as announced by the state communications watchdog. This move comes shortly after the blocking of the U.S. children’s gaming platform, Roblox. Russian authorities claim that FaceTime is being misused for criminal activities, while Roblox is accused of spreading extremist content and “LGBT propaganda.”
This crackdown on foreign tech platforms is part of a broader trend that includes restrictions imposed on Google’s YouTube, Meta’s WhatsApp, and the Telegram messaging service. Critics argue that these measures amount to censorship and an increase in state control over private communications, whereas Russian officials maintain that they are legitimate law enforcement steps. Earlier this year, Russia introduced a state-backed alternative app called Max, which critics fear could be utilized for surveillance, a claim dismissed by state media.
The Russian communications regulator, Roskomnadzor, defended its decision by stating that FaceTime has been linked to organizing terrorist attacks, recruiting individuals for criminal activities, and perpetrating fraud against Russian citizens. However, no specific evidence was provided to support these allegations.
Apple has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the FaceTime block, an app that allows users to make free video and audio calls via Wi-Fi or cellular data. Reports from Moscow residents indicate that attempting to use FaceTime results in a message stating “User unavailable.” Roskomnadzor has intensified efforts in recent months to block Western media and tech platforms that allegedly violate Russian laws.
In a similar vein, Roblox was also banned by Roskomnadzor for allegedly disseminating extremist materials and promoting “LGBT propaganda.” A spokesperson for Roblox emphasized the platform’s commitment to safety and compliance with local laws, highlighting its positive role in fostering learning and meaningful connections. Notably, Roblox has faced bans in multiple countries, including Iraq and Turkey, due to concerns about the platform being exploited by predators to harm children.
Russia’s stance on LGBT issues has been contentious, with the country designating the “international LGBT movement” as extremist in 2023, leading to severe legal repercussions for individuals and advocates associated with the community.
