Must read

Isiah Whitlock Jr., a well-known actor recognized for his roles in the popular TV series “The Wire” and “Veep” on HBO, as well as in multiple films directed by Spike Lee, passed away at the age of 71 in New York following a brief illness, as confirmed by his manager, Brian Liebman. Whitlock portrayed the openly corrupt state Sen. Clay Davis in “The Wire” over 25 episodes throughout the show’s five seasons, where he became known for his iconic catchphrase, “sheee-it,” delivered in moments of triumph and straightforwardness. This catchphrase originated in his first collaboration with Lee in the 2002 film “The 25th Hour.”

Director Spike Lee expressed deep sorrow over Whitlock’s passing, highlighting the significant loss to the entertainment industry. Whitlock featured in four other films by Lee, fostering a strong bond and camaraderie over the years. Lee particularly cherished the time spent with Whitlock during the filming of “Da 5 Bloods” in Thailand and their shared experiences at various events. Describing Whitlock as a beautiful soul who radiated positivity and humor, Lee emphasized the actor’s ability to bring joy to everyone around him, both on and off the screen.

Whitlock’s comedic talents and affable nature were widely appreciated by his colleagues and audience members. His passing marks another loss for fans of “The Wire,” following the recent death of actor James Ransone, known for his role as Ziggy Sobotka on the show. Hailing from South Bend, Ind., Whitlock’s journey to acting began at Southwest Minnesota State University, leading him to a successful career that included appearances in various TV shows and films before his memorable roles in “The Wire” and “Veep.”

In addition to his role in “The Wire,” Whitlock also portrayed Secretary of Defense George Maddox in “Veep,” engaging in presidential primaries against Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ character. His manager, Liebman, paid tribute to Whitlock on social media, describing him as a cherished friend and exceptional talent. Whitlock’s passing has left a void in the entertainment world, with tributes pouring in from colleagues and fans, including “The Wire” creator David Simon, who hailed Whitlock not only as a remarkable actor but also as a remarkable individual with a kind spirit and gentlemanly demeanor.
