“Lux for Less: Lab-Grown Diamonds Gaining Popularity”

Must read

The surge in popularity of lab-grown diamonds as a substitute for natural mined diamonds is evident among engaged couples, challenging the longstanding dominance of natural diamonds in the market. Toronto residents Daniel Ng and Olivia Chan opted for a lab-grown diamond during their 2024 ring-shopping experience due to the substantial cost difference compared to natural stones.

Industry experts highlight that lab-grown diamonds can be up to 90% cheaper than their natural counterparts. The trend of choosing lab-grown diamonds is on the rise, with more young couples embracing this option. However, an investigation by Marketplace revealed significant price discrepancies for nearly identical lab-grown diamonds, raising concerns about potential overpayment by consumers.

In a comparison, two lab-grown diamonds, both one carat in size with D-color, ideal cut, VS1 clarity, and round shape, were purchased by CBC journalists. The diamond from Blue Nile was priced at $1,639.23, whereas the diamond from Alibaba cost only $228.86. Additional research by Marketplace revealed similar stones being sold for as much as $1,500 before taxes and fees.

Daniel Ng, who proposed to Olivia Chan with a lab-grown diamond ring, found the pricing to be a good deal. The couple was surprised by the significant price gap between the two diamonds they purchased. Industry analyst Paul Zimnisky highlighted the potential credibility issues arising from such price variations, emphasizing the profit margin incentives for retailers selling lab-grown diamonds.

Eddy and Allan Young, accredited jewelry appraisers, confirmed that both purchased diamonds were of equal quality and should be valued similarly. Despite the consistent quality, the prices quoted by different retailers varied significantly. The industry acknowledged the pricing inconsistencies, with Blue Nile attributing its higher prices to brand reputation and quality assurance.

Consumer awareness and caution when purchasing lab-grown diamonds are essential, as prices are expected to align more closely with wholesale levels in the future. The importance of researching, reviewing, and verifying purchases to ensure authenticity and fair pricing was emphasized by experts and consumers alike. As the industry evolves, consumers are encouraged to shop wisely and seek transparency in diamond pricing to make informed decisions.
