Sarah Boyd grew up surrounded by pythons and finds them to be adorable and low-maintenance pets, contrary to common fears. Alongside her three-year-old son Jack, they joined hundreds of attendees at the Manitoba Reptile Breeders’ Expo in West St. Paul near Winnipeg. The expo, organized by Winnipeg Reptiles, showcased a diverse array of reptiles and exotic animals for sale, attracting enthusiasts and breeders from across Canada.
Jack, who shares his mother’s love for reptiles, eagerly observed the snakes on display at the event. Curtis Fraser, the owner of Fraser Reptiles in Ste. Genevieve, emphasized the importance of educating people about the joys of owning reptiles. Despite initial apprehensions, Fraser noted the transformation in people’s perceptions after learning more about these unique pets.
With a passion for reptiles spanning over a decade, Fraser remains dedicated to sharing his enthusiasm with others. He believes that with proper understanding, reptiles can be as rewarding as traditional pets like dogs and cats. Dan Yurkiw, a reptile enthusiast, purchased a red-eyed crocodile skink at the expo, expressing excitement to add it to his collection of exotic creatures.
Yurkiw appreciated the presence of youth at the expo, showcasing a growing interest in reptiles and exotic animals. His fascination with creatures that instill fear in others drives his passion for exploring the unconventional. The Manitoba Reptile Breeders’ Expo continues to captivate visitors with its diverse offerings, running on Saturday and Sunday at the Access Centre in West St. Paul.
