Colombia has decided to recall its ambassador from the United States following President Donald Trump’s announcement of increased tariffs on the country and a halt to all payments. This escalation stems from U.S. military actions against vessels suspected of carrying drugs.
In response, Trump referred to Colombian President Gustavo Petro as an “illegal drug leader,” a statement that Petro’s government deemed offensive. Colombia’s foreign ministry confirmed the recall of Ambassador Daniel Garcia-Pena for consultations by President Gustavo Petro, with the ambassador currently in Bogota awaiting further instructions.
The strained relations between Washington and Bogota hit a new low with Trump’s accusations of Colombia’s involvement in the drug trade. Petro has criticized the U.S. military’s deadly strikes on vessels in the Caribbean, which the Trump administration justifies as necessary to counter the threat posed by “narcoterrorists” linked to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
Legal experts and human rights activists have raised concerns about the legality of these military actions, as the U.S. attempts to classify drug traffickers on boats as unlawful combatants.
Trump also announced a cut in financial aid to Colombia and the introduction of new tariffs, although the specific funding being targeted remains unclear. Previously, Colombia was a major recipient of U.S. aid but saw a reduction in assistance this year due to the closure of USAID.
Colombia faces a 10% tariff on most of its goods, in line with Trump’s approach towards several countries. The U.S. is Colombia’s primary trading partner, with 35% of Colombian exports heading north. Despite being a significant exporter of commodities like oil, coal, coffee, flowers, and bananas, Colombia has experienced a trade deficit with the U.S. in recent months.
Petro condemned the bombing of a vessel that resulted in casualties, disputing U.S. claims regarding the boat’s ownership. He criticized Trump for his remarks, emphasizing that Colombia has always maintained respectful relations with the U.S.
Efforts to combat coca cultivation in Colombia have faced challenges, with Petro highlighting the need for significant interventions to address the issue. The expansion of coca crops in Colombia has raised concerns, despite decades of U.S. assistance aimed at eradicating illegal cultivation.
The recent U.S. strikes on boats in the Caribbean have sparked controversy, with calls for transparency and accountability growing among lawmakers and human rights advocates. Survivors of these strikes have been repatriated to Colombia and Ecuador, as questions regarding the legality and justification of the military actions persist.
