A couple from Kamloops, British Columbia, utilized 3D printing technology to create a feeding stand for a foster kitten with a unique medical condition. Piglet, a five-month-old kitten under the care of Angela and Jason Lyall, faced feeding difficulties since she was two days old.
Despite being part of a litter with her mother, Piglet struggled to eat properly and failed to thrive like her siblings. Initially perceived as lethargic, she was later diagnosed with megaesophagus, a condition affecting the food passage to her stomach, leading to malnourishment and pneumonia.
To address Piglet’s special needs, the couple designed a vertical feeding stand using a free online template. The bespoke stand allowed Piglet to eat safely, preventing food regurgitation and potential inhalation risks. The couple’s innovative approach garnered significant attention, with a video showcasing Piglet’s feeder going viral on social media.
Angela shared Piglet’s story as a means to raise awareness about megaesophagus in cats, emphasizing the rarity of the condition compared to dogs. The couple expressed readiness to adjust the feeding stand as Piglet grows, highlighting the ongoing commitment required to ensure her well-being.
The Lyalls devote considerable time and effort to feed Piglet five times daily and provide post-meal support, describing it as a collective family endeavor. Despite facing uncertainty about Piglet’s survival initially, the couple remains grateful to witness her thriving progress and are determined to support her continued growth and health.
