Jessica De Filippo’s early goal at the 10-minute mark secured a vital 1-0 away victory for the Vancouver Rise against the Montreal Roses in Northern Super League action over the weekend. This win marked Vancouver’s second consecutive road victory against playoff-bound teams, following their 2-0 triumph over the Ottawa Rapid earlier in the week.
The Rise, with a record of 11-7-6, head into the final week of the inaugural season of the Canadian professional women’s soccer league holding a three-point lead over both Ottawa and Montreal, who are tied at 10-8-6, for the second spot in the six-team league standings.
Toronto has already secured the top spot in the standings, while Vancouver, Montreal, and Ottawa have secured the remaining playoff positions. The playoff matchups will be determined based on the league standings after the upcoming week’s games, with the finals scheduled for November 15 at Toronto’s BMO Field, where the victorious team will lift the Diana B. Matheson Cup.
Rise goalkeeper Morgan McAslan displayed a solid performance, making three crucial saves to secure her second consecutive clean sheet.
In another match on the same day, Meggie Dougherty Howard netted two goals as the Calgary Wild triumphed 3-1 over the Halifax Tides, who have been eliminated from playoff contention. Grace Stordy also contributed a goal for the Wild, improving their record to 8-14-2, while Syd Kennedy scored the lone goal for last-place Halifax (3-14-7).
