The Toronto Blue Jays welcomed back pitchers Max Scherzer and Chris Bassitt for the American League Championship Series against the Seattle Mariners, while shortstop Bo Bichette remained sidelined with a left knee sprain. Both teams revealed their 26-man rosters ahead of Game 1 at Rogers Centre.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider explained that Scherzer was set for a potential starting role or extended appearance, with Bassitt primed for bullpen duty and ready for any situation. Schneider emphasized the importance of having both pitchers available given the unpredictable nature of the games.
In Game 2, the Blue Jays planned to start rookie Trey Yesavage, with Shane Bieber taking the mound in Game 3 as the series shifted to Seattle. The pitching order mirrored the successful lineup used in Toronto’s division series victory over the New York Yankees.
Although Schneider did not confirm a starter for Game 4, he suggested that Scherzer could play a crucial role. Scherzer, an eight-time All-Star, had a mixed season with a 5-5 record and a 5.19 ERA in 17 starts, marked by a mid-season injury break and a challenging performance in his final outings.
Bassitt, on the other hand, posted an 11-9 record with a 3.96 ERA in 32 appearances, mostly as a starter. He had been on the injured list due to lower-back inflammation but was now back in action for the pivotal series.
Bichette, the Blue Jays’ hit leader for the season, continued his recovery process, participating in outfield drills and simulated games as he aimed for a comeback. Despite his absence on the field, Bichette remained engaged with the team, providing insights and maintaining a positive attitude.
The Mariners bolstered their roster with the addition of All-Star pitcher Bryan Woo and utility player Miles Mastrobuoni, replacing Luke Raley and Ben Williamson. Woo, known for his impressive regular-season performance, had been sidelined due to pectoral inflammation but was set to contribute to the Mariners’ efforts.
Both teams were gearing up for an intense series after overcoming tough opponents in the previous rounds, with the Blue Jays seeking their first ALCS victory since 2016 and eyeing the opportunity to capture their first World Series title since 1993.
