Actor Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers Returns Award Over Censored Speech

Must read

Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers has decided to return her Toronto Film Critics Association Award after a part of her acceptance speech showing support for Palestine was omitted. The TFCA’s president, Johanna Schneller, mentioned that the Canadian actor and filmmaker’s speech was edited for brevity, leading to her resignation from the association.

Tailfeathers received the award for outstanding supporting performance in a Canadian film for her role in Melanie Oates’ drama “Sweet Angel Baby.” Despite not attending the gala on Monday night, she sent a video of her acceptance speech, which she claims was censored.

In an email to the TFCA, Tailfeathers expressed her decision to return the award, emphasizing that she followed filming instructions provided. Schneller stated that she was saddened by Tailfeathers’ action and explained that the decision to shorten the speech, including others’, was to keep the event on schedule.

However, Tailfeathers asserted that her mention of the Palestine conflict was only two sentences long and felt that her words were neutralized and censored. Several resignations followed within the TFCA, with members like critics Adam Nayman, Saffron Maeve, Sarah-Tai Black, and film writer Radheyan Simonpillai stepping down.

In the omitted part of her speech, Tailfeathers referenced the impact of the October 7th events during the filming of “Sweet Angel Baby,” expressing solidarity with the people of Palestine facing ongoing challenges. She highlighted her refusal to be silenced on matters concerning the Israel-Palestine conflict.

The actor also extended empathy to the Jewish community affected by antisemitic violence, stressing the need to combat all forms of hate. She commended those in the Jewish community speaking against the Palestinian genocide and stood in solidarity with Palestinian artists and filmmakers.

The conflict in Palestine, triggered by an October 7, 2023 Hamas attack, resulted in significant casualties on both sides, with ongoing tensions until a ceasefire agreement in October 2025. The toll of the Israeli campaign in Gaza, as reported by the Gaza Health Ministry, includes over 72,000 fatalities, with a high number of women and children among the casualties.

Overall, Tailfeathers’ actions have sparked discussions within the industry and prompted a broader dialogue on the importance of freedom of speech and solidarity with communities affected by conflict.
