Wealthsimple, a Canadian fintech company, is introducing new products and services to enhance its competitive edge against traditional banks. During an event in Calgary, the company unveiled plans to offer accounts tailored for children and teenagers, as well as features allowing family members to oversee each other’s accounts with proper authorization.

In an interview with CBC News, Danish Ajmeri, Wealthsimple’s senior director of product, emphasized the company’s aim to assist parents and children in developing better money management habits. The new account features will enable parents to transfer funds directly to their children’s accounts by increasing the interest rates.

Moreover, Wealthsimple is set to launch a U.S. dollar chequing account without account fees, facilitating cross-border transactions between the U.S. and Canada by autumn 2026. Additionally, the company is introducing a feature permitting clients to appoint a trusted individual to manage their investment accounts with permission.

Ajmeri highlighted the importance of providing secure alternatives to insecure practices like password sharing. He emphasized the company’s commitment to maintaining robust security measures, including passkey authentication, to safeguard client accounts.

Addressing concerns about the newly introduced features, financial planner Shannon Lee Simmons expressed cautious optimism, emphasizing the potential benefits if implemented securely. Simmons welcomed the focus on youth financial products, noting the lasting impact of early financial relationships on future financial decisions.

Wealthsimple’s expansion into the business market includes offering business chequing accounts, credit cards, U.S. dollar accounts, and business lines of credit. The company aims to provide cost-effective solutions to small businesses compared to traditional banking services.

Despite facing some backlash on social media for delays in delivering promised products, Wealthsimple remains responsive to client feedback. Hanna Zaidi, Wealthsimple’s vice-president of payment strategy, acknowledged the challenges of pioneering innovative financial services in Canada and emphasized the company’s commitment to addressing client concerns promptly.
