Britney Spears, represented by her lawyer, pleaded guilty to a reduced charge in a Southern California court to avoid jail time for driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. The 44-year-old singer did not appear in court, but her attorney, Michael A. Goldstein, agreed to the plea deal known as a “wet reckless.” This agreement includes a year of probation, mandatory DUI classes, and state-imposed fines.
The district attorney’s office explained that this plea offer is typical for individuals without prior DUI offenses, no accidents or injuries involved, and a low blood-alcohol level. It is particularly common for defendants who have demonstrated a commitment to addressing their issues, similar to Spears, who voluntarily sought treatment at a substance abuse facility in April.
Goldstein expressed that while no one is pleased about pleading guilty, resolving the matter was important. He appreciated the district attorney’s acknowledgment of Spears’ efforts to help herself. Goldstein clarified that Spears completed her rehabilitation program and denied reports claiming she left prematurely. When asked about her future plans, he responded, “I don’t know, but certainly a lot.”
During the hearing, Spears received summary probation, which does not require regular meetings with a parole officer. She agreed to yield her Fourth Amendment rights during traffic stops, allowing searches and sobriety tests. However, the judge exempted her home from this provision at Goldstein’s request.
District Attorney Erik Nasarenko commended Spears for taking full responsibility but stressed the seriousness of DUI offenses. He emphasized the importance of complying with court-mandated requirements, including ongoing substance abuse treatment, weekly therapy sessions, and monthly psychiatric visits, to prevent reoffending.
Spears faced a single misdemeanor DUI charge, which did not necessitate her presence at the arraignment. The incident garnered significant media attention in Ventura, where she resides and was arrested in March. Spears’ representatives previously acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and expressed hope for positive changes in her life.
The singer was stopped for erratic driving on U.S. 101 and subsequently arrested after failing sobriety tests. Authorities confirmed the presence of alcohol and drugs in her system without specifying the substances or her blood alcohol level. Spears and her team have refrained from commenting on the charges since they were filed.
