Two vibrant orange autonomous sail drones are currently floating on Lake Erie as part of a new initiative by the U.S. Coast Guard. Launched in May, these drones mark the first deployment of such technology in the Great Lakes region and are outfitted with 360-degree cameras.
The U.S. Coast Guard has highlighted the drones’ multifunctionality, which includes aiding in search and rescue missions, responding to environmental spills, and supporting law enforcement activities. The live camera feed from the drones is continuously monitored by Coast Guard personnel, who can adjust the drones’ positioning as needed. Notably, no footage is recorded by the drones as per official statements.
Lieutenant Junior Grade Samuel Rodriguez Garcia from the U.S. Coast Guard emphasized that the drones are primarily deployed for situational awareness purposes rather than surveillance. Describing them as mobile cameras providing real-time insights into on-site activities, Garcia stressed the importance of their role.
Both U.S. and Canadian agencies, including law enforcement bodies, may access the drone technology through proper authorization processes, as explained by Garcia. Enhancing border security and combatting cross-border criminal activities are cited as key functions of the drones by Garcia.
While the Canadian Coast Guard has clarified its non-involvement in the U.S. sail drone program, there is a strong collaborative relationship between the two agencies, according to spokesperson Craig Macartney. The partnership between the Canadian and U.S. Coast Guards is crucial for bolstering maritime security efforts and fostering inter-governmental collaboration.
Operating within U.S. waters in the Great Lakes, the sail drones are equipped with collision avoidance capabilities to steer clear of vessels, Garcia noted. Boaters are advised to maintain a distance of approximately 100 meters from the drones for safety. The drone deployment is a seasonal endeavor, with the drones being retrieved from the water once ice formation begins.
Both coast guards participate in the Great Lakes marine security operation, which runs around the clock and involves various government law enforcement entities. This initiative underscores the commitment to safeguarding the waters and enhancing maritime security in the region.
