Leaders from various non-profit and community organizations in London emphasize the importance of the health sector adapting to the evolving needs of the city as it grows and becomes more diverse. At a recent gathering called The Big Picture, which brings together policymakers and non-profits to discuss critical issues in the region, the focus was on community health, inclusion, and belonging. Dr. Alex Summers, the medical officer of health at Middlesex-London Health Unit, highlighted the significance of reducing health disparities by prioritizing these aspects.
According to Dr. Summers, the overall health of a community is interconnected, and achieving true community health requires bringing everyone together through connectedness, inclusion, and belonging. However, there are still gaps in providing adequate support to vulnerable groups such as the unhoused, low-income individuals, and marginalized communities, as stated by Donavon Trice, the men’s sexual health outreach coordinator at the Regional HIV/AIDS Connection.
Trice emphasized the importance of creating inclusive healthcare spaces, suggesting that connecting marginalized individuals with physicians from their own communities could improve their experience and willingness to seek care. Paloma Terra from the London & Middlesex Local Immigration Partnership echoed the need for “culturally safe” medical environments to cater to immigrants and newcomers, similar to the Indigenous healing space at Victoria Hospital.
In addition to addressing immediate health concerns, Dr. Summers stressed the importance of focusing on preventive measures to build community health. By prioritizing issues like food insecurity and systemic challenges faced by families, the goal is to intervene early and promote overall well-being. Trice emphasized the role of healthcare professionals in fostering inclusivity and confronting personal biases to create safer and more welcoming environments for all individuals.
