In Star Blanket Cree Nation, community members experienced a significant event as they welcomed a herd of bison to their lands over the recent May long weekend. The arrival of these iconic animals marked a historic day for the community located about 100 kilometers northeast of Regina.
Sharon Strongarm, who attended the bison release with her grandchildren, described the moment as emotional and spiritual. Witnessing the bison stepping out onto the field brought a sense of excitement and connection to their heritage.
The initiative to reintroduce bison to the community was a dream envisioned by Ariane Starblanket’s late grandfather, a former chief of Star Blanket. This endeavor holds significance in terms of healing, food sovereignty, and cultural restoration for the community.
Youth involvement in the project is seen as crucial for the future, with the intention for them to care for the bison, nurture the land, and uphold cultural traditions. The return of the bison is not only a symbolic act but also a step towards revitalizing history, heritage, and language.
Tristan Starr-Desnomie, one of the selected bison keepers, expressed his honor in taking on this responsibility. His experience in caring for other animals will now extend to the community’s bison herd, emphasizing the importance of daily care and respect for these majestic creatures.
Looking ahead, the community plans to expand the area for the bison herd to roam freely. While the bison currently serve an educational purpose, the long-term goal is for them to provide essential resources like food, clothing, and medicine to the people of Star Blanket Cree Nation.
The return of the bison not only signifies a reconnection with the community’s past but also stands as a beacon of hope for future generations to learn, appreciate, and benefit from these iconic animals.
