A new battery-grade cobalt refinery is set to be established in northern Ontario, transforming the former silver mining region into a hub for this essential mineral. The facility, located in Cobalt, will process cobalt rock to produce cobalt sulfate, a key component in lithium-ion batteries used widely in various applications like electric vehicles and smartphones.
Electra Battery Materials, the company spearheading the project, anticipates the refinery to be operational by the end of 2027, with a capacity to generate 6,500 tonnes of battery-grade cobalt annually, sufficient to supply around one million electric vehicle batteries per year. According to the company’s CEO, Trent Mell, the growing need for critical minerals in modern technologies underscores the significance of this initiative not only for transportation and energy storage but also for national security.
The refining process at the plant involves meticulous adjustments of chemical and physical parameters to eliminate impurities such as iron and copper from the cobalt. The refined cobalt product ensures battery stability, preventing overheating and enhancing charge retention.
Although the town of Cobalt acquired its name from the discovery of cobalt during the early 1900s, the refinery will not source cobalt locally but will import it from overseas. Despite the historical silver rush in the region, recent exploration efforts in old silver mines to find sustainable cobalt sources have been unsuccessful. Electra’s transformation of a former metals refinery signifies a shift towards developing a domestic supply chain for this critical mineral.
The cobalt supply for the refinery will originate from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a major global producer. Concerns regarding mining practices in the DRC, including issues like child labor and poor environmental practices, have prompted the company to assure rigorous auditing and compliance measures to address these ethical challenges. The goal is to produce a significant portion of the world’s cobalt sulfate by next year, with a major supply agreement already in place with a South Korean firm.
This move aims to reduce reliance on China, which currently dominates the global battery-grade cobalt refining industry. By establishing a local supply chain, Electra seeks to enhance North America’s strategic position in the critical minerals market, aligning with geopolitical trends emphasizing the need for secure and diverse supply chains.
