In a tale reminiscent of a determined small enterprise, Canada’s premier non-alcoholic winery secured a $1 million investment on the TV show Dragons’ Den in January. Founded by Tyler Harlton from Pense, Sask., and Chris Pagliocchini, a scientist at Agriculture Canada, ONES is rooted in Summerland, B.C. The duo’s stint on Dragons’ Den proved pivotal in crafting wines that mimic the taste and texture of traditional alcoholic varieties, with ONES products boasting a mere 0.5% alcohol content and zero sugar.
Since its inception in 2022, ONES has transitioned from niche boutique shops to being stocked in almost 600 retail outlets nationwide. Harlton expressed to CBC Saskatchewan the significance of their Dragons’ Den experience, underscoring how it validated their years of dedication and hard work. The Dragons were taken aback by ONES’s rapid growth and revenue, particularly by the fact that profits are reinvested back into marketing efforts after compensating the owners and their team.
Arlene Dickinson, a veteran Dragon and business magnate, offered valuable advice to the ONES team, emphasizing the importance of showcasing their Canadian roots in the non-alcoholic beverage market. This advice prompted changes like adding a Canadian maple leaf to their merlot bottles. Beyond expanding their business, the success of ONES holds deeper meaning for its owners, as it aims to negate the stigma associated with non-alcoholic options, providing individuals like Katherine Herback from Regina with quality alternatives while combatting societal pressures and judgment.
Manjit Minhas, a prominent figure in the beverage industry, ultimately extended a $1 million investment offer to ONES, cementing a milestone moment for Harlton and Pagliocchini. This achievement signifies a positive step forward in normalizing non-alcoholic choices and catering to diverse consumer needs.
