“Canadian Agriculture Research Centers Face Closure”

Must read

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada has announced the closure of seven research operations, including two satellite research farms in Saskatchewan. The affected farms are located in Scott, southwest of North Battleford, and near Indian Head, east of Regina, where workers focus on enhancing crop production in the Prairie region.

Indian Head Mayor Steven Cole expressed shock upon learning that the community’s research farm would soon shut down, emphasizing its 140-year history. He mentioned that operations in Indian Head might only continue for another four to six months, impacting around 30 full-time employees who may face unemployment or relocation to other rural areas.

According to reports, the federal department has reduced approximately 665 positions nationwide, with nearly 1,050 employees receiving notices. The move is part of the government’s initiative to streamline the public service budget. Cole highlighted the sentimental value of the Indian Head research farm to the community and his family, spanning multiple generations who have been involved with the facility.

The closure of these research sites, including those in Saskatchewan, N.S., and Manitoba, has raised concerns about losing valuable agricultural research capabilities. Richard Gray, a professor at the University of Saskatchewan, stressed the significance of supporting research that enhances crop yields and sustains competitiveness in the global market. He emphasized the importance of continued research to drive innovation in agricultural practices.

In addition to the Saskatchewan farms, satellite facilities in Nappan, N.S., and Portage la Prairie, Man., will also be shut down. Furthermore, research and development centers in Guelph, Ont., Quebec City, and Lacombe, Alta., are among the sites facing closure. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada reassured that despite the cuts, it remains committed to its core mandate, operating 17 research centers and farmland across the country.
