Comedian Mae Martin to Host 55th Juno Awards

Must read

Comedian Mae Martin has been selected as the host for the upcoming 55th annual Juno Awards, as confirmed by event organizers on Thursday. Following their successful 2024 hosting role at the Canadian Screen Awards and the launch of their Netflix hit show, “Wayward,” Martin will become the first solo comedian to lead the ceremony since Russell Peters in 2009.

Reflecting on their journey from appearing on a radio show in Toronto at age 13 to now hosting a major awards event, Martin expressed excitement about the opportunity. The multi-talented Toronto native, known for their work in comedy, acting, writing, and music, will grace the stage in Hamilton on March 29, just two years after receiving their first Juno nomination for comedy album of the year.

Martin’s hosting gig marks a departure from the trend of repeat hosts at the Juno Awards, with previous editions being led by Michael Bublé, Nelly Furtado, and Simu Liu. The comedian aims to bring a casual, energetic vibe to the show, likening it to a lively music event where the audience can let loose.

Scheduled performances at the awards show will include sets by R&B/soul artist Daniel Caesar and folk/roots singer-songwriter William Prince, both set to receive accolades. Additionally, acts like Hamilton’s Arkells and Toronto’s the Beaches will take the stage, while music legend Joni Mitchell will be honored with a lifetime achievement award and Furtado will join the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

Martin’s involvement comes at a pivotal moment in the Canadian entertainment landscape, with a growing emphasis on the unique cultural contributions of the country. The recent awards ceremonies have seen artists proudly showcasing Canadian identity in the face of external pressures, with a renewed appreciation for the country’s artistic heritage.

The 2026 Juno Awards will introduce some category changes to further support Canadian talent, including the addition of the Latin music recording of the year award and updated eligibility criteria for rap categories. The event is set to take place at the newly renovated TD Coliseum in Hamilton on March 29, with a live broadcast on various CBC platforms.
