Daredevil Alex Honnold Scales Taipei 101 Sans Safety Gear

Must read

American rock climber Alex Honnold successfully climbed the Taipei 101 skyscraper without any safety gear or ropes, thrilling the gathered crowd with his daring feat. The 508-meter ascent, broadcasted live on Netflix with a brief delay, captivated viewers worldwide. Originally planned for Saturday, the climb was postponed by 24 hours due to inclement weather.

Honnold, renowned for his ropeless climb up El Capitan in Yosemite National Park, navigated the unique challenges of Taipei 101 using his bare hands and strategic footholds. The iconic building’s 101 floors posed a significant challenge, with the middle section’s 64 floors, known as the “bamboo boxes,” presenting the most daunting obstacles. Honnold’s ascent involved maneuvering around ornamental structures and climbing up overhanging sections interspersed with brief rests on balconies.

While Honnold was not the first climber to reach the top of Taipei 101, his achievement as the first to do so without safety equipment solidifies his place in climbing history. French climber Alain Robert had previously scaled the skyscraper on Christmas Day in 2004, but Honnold’s ropeless climb has set a new standard for daring ascents.
