Global fashion icons and the general public came together on Friday morning to bid farewell to legendary designer Valentino at his funeral service held at the central Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri in Rome. The funeral followed a two-day public viewing at the Valentino Foundation’s headquarters in Rome, serving as the final tribute to the renowned designer.
Prominent figures from the fashion world, including Tom Ford and Donatella Versace, as well as the influential Anna Wintour from Vogue magazine, attended the service, alongside celebrities like Anne Hathaway. Fans and supporters gathered outside the church, some donning red attire or accessories as a nod to Valentino’s iconic color.
Valentino Garavani, who passed away at 93 in his Rome home earlier in the week, was revered by royalty, first ladies, and celebrities such as Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Queen Rania of Jordan, and Julia Roberts. Known as the “last emperor” of Italian fashion, Valentino’s atelier remained in Rome, although he often unveiled his collections in Paris.
The late designer’s exquisite gowns have graced numerous Academy Awards ceremonies, with stars like Julia Roberts and Cate Blanchett showcasing his creations on the prestigious red carpet. During the funeral, Giancarlo Giammetti, Valentino’s longtime partner, emotionally expressed gratitude for the beauty the designer instilled in their lives, emphasizing their shared dreams and achievements.
The fashion industry and admirers worldwide mourn the loss of Valentino, whose legacy of timeless elegance and sophistication continues to inspire generations.
