“High Radon Levels in Canadian Homes Spark Safety Concerns”

Must read

In numerous Canadian residences, a dangerous gas called radon is present, imperceptible and odorless. Statistics reveal that over 20% of homes in Canada have elevated radon levels, a significant increase since the late 2000s. This radioactive substance seeps into buildings from the ground, and experts suggest that contemporary construction methods and renovations are contributing to more Canadians being exposed to radon in their own homes.

The efforts to combat this issue include a recent update to the national building code released in late December. This update mandates the inclusion of a passive radon stack in newly constructed homes, acting as a ventilation system to reduce indoor radon accumulation. While this code provides construction guidelines nationwide, its implementation depends on provinces and territories.

For existing homes at risk of high radon levels, testing is crucial. To determine radon levels, homeowners can engage a radon measurement professional or purchase a test kit. Health Canada recommends testing for a minimum of 91 days, ideally during colder months when windows and doors are frequently closed.

In cases where homes exceed the recommended radon threshold, mitigation systems are necessary. These systems, typically involving a pipe and fan to expel radon outdoors, can cost homeowners between $2,000 and $5,000. Various provinces offer funding options, such as Ontario’s home warranty program and Manitoba’s financing scheme to spread out mitigation costs.

However, the expense of mitigating radon poses a challenge for many Canadians, according to the Canadian Lung Association. The organization offers grants to assist low- and middle-income households with mitigation costs, but demand exceeds available resources. Despite the costs involved, experts like Dr. Kong Khoo emphasize the importance of radon mitigation in protecting families, citing personal experiences with high radon levels and cancer diagnosis.
