The recent explosion outside the home of investigative journalist Sigfrido Ranucci has raised concerns about press freedom in Italy, according to his colleague. The incident occurred late on Thursday when a bomb detonated near Ranucci’s residence, causing damage to two vehicles owned by his family. Ranucci, known for hosting the investigative TV news program “Report” on RAI, Italy’s public broadcaster, has been vocal in exposing organized crime, corporate wrongdoing, and government corruption.
Aldo Ciccolella, senior editor of “Report,” expressed dismay over the attack, emphasizing that it sends a chilling message to all journalists, hinting that they could be the next targets. Fortunately, neither Ranucci nor any of his family members sustained injuries in the explosion, which destroyed the cars parked outside his home.
Despite facing threats and intimidation over the past decade due to his investigative work, Ranucci remains resolute in continuing his efforts to uncover corruption and criminal activities in Italy. Ciccolella disclosed that Ranucci has been under police protection since 2009, with security measures heightened in 2021 following an assassination threat. Ranucci affirmed that the bombing would not deter him or his team from pursuing their journalistic mission.
The attack has shocked Ranucci’s team, especially considering the brazen nature of the incident near Rome. “Report” has garnered controversy from various quarters, including politicians, corporations, foreign governments, and criminal organizations, making it challenging to pinpoint potential suspects. Authorities are investigating the bombing as a criminal act involving mafia-style methods.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the attack, emphasizing the importance of defending freedom and independence in journalism. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) also denounced the incident and called for a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice. Despite the ordeal, Ranucci and his team remain undeterred, with plans to launch their new season on schedule.
While institutions like RAI provide security for journalists like Ranucci, not all reporters in Italy have similar protection. Ciccolella advised journalists to remain vigilant in their reporting endeavors, underscoring the necessity of ensuring personal safety in the face of potential threats.
