Italian player Jannik Sinner emerged victorious in the China Open, defeating American youngster Learner Tien 6-2, 6-2 in the final held on Wednesday. Sinner, who had faced disappointment at the U.S. Open, captured his third title of the season and 21st overall with a commanding performance against the 19-year-old Tien, who became the tournament’s second-youngest finalist.
Expressing his satisfaction with the win, Sinner stated, “We will strive for improvement and aim for more success. I am pleased with how things are going.” With his focus now shifting to the Shanghai Masters, Sinner is set to be a frontrunner following Carlos Alcaraz’s withdrawal due to an ankle injury sustained during the Japan Open, which he triumphed in on Tuesday.
Prior to clinching the title, Sinner secured his place in the final by defeating Alex de Minaur in the semifinals, marking his 11th consecutive career victory. Tien, ranked 52nd, advanced to his first tour final after Daniil Medvedev retired injured in their match on Tuesday.
In a parallel event, the WTA 1000 tournament witnessed American player Emma Navarro causing an upset by defeating top-seeded Iga Swiatek in the fourth round with a scoreline of 6-4, 4-6, 6-0. Navarro, aged 24, achieved her fourth career win against a top-five opponent, as Swiatek struggled with 70 unforced errors.
Navarro’s success saw her join fellow Americans Coco Gauff and Amanda Anisimova in the quarterfinals, marking a milestone as the first time three American players have reached the final eight since the tournament’s inception in 2004. The tournament continues with the prospect of another American advancing as fifth-seeded Jessica Pegula faces Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk, while second-seeded Gauff is slated to compete against Eva Lys on Thursday.
