A 17-year-old individual, who was arrested and charged with terrorism offenses in February 2024 by INSET, has been granted bail with strict conditions in Ottawa. The accusation involves a conspiracy to violently attack Jewish individuals in Ottawa, potentially through the detonation of an explosive device at a pro-Israel rally at Parliament Hill in the fall of 2023.
The accused, who was 15 at the time of the arrest, has been in custody at a juvenile detention facility for about 21 months. The trial for both accused is scheduled to begin in the spring and is expected to last around 10 weeks.
During the recent bail hearing, the teen’s defense team proposed $20,000 bonds from each parent for his release, but the court ordered a $50,000 bond from each parent. Additionally, the teen must pay $2,000 if he violates any of the bail conditions, which include wearing a GPS monitor, receiving education at home, undergoing de-radicalization therapy, and constant supervision by a parent.
The accused’s name cannot be disclosed due to a routine ban on revealing the identities of charged youths. The bail conditions also restrict the accused from using the internet, leaving home during specific hours, and interacting with visitors without parental supervision. Further court discussions are expected to finalize additional conditions next week.
The teen facing release on bail is charged with offenses such as conspiring to commit murder for a terrorist group and facilitating terrorist activities. The other teen, who remains in custody, faces similar charges, including possessing explosive substances with the intent to endanger life.
