Police in Whale Cove, Nunavut, have arrested a woman on charges of second-degree murder and arson following a residential fire that resulted in the death of a man earlier this week. The incident occurred around 2:50 a.m. on Monday at a four-unit building in the 200 block of the community. Volunteer firefighters quickly tackled the blaze and rescued an unconscious man from the property, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries. The victim has been identified as Jonathan Ekwalak, aged 37.
Authorities have raised suspicions about the fire, prompting the initiation of an investigation by the Major Crime Unit. In an official statement released on Thursday, law enforcement revealed that a 36-year-old female suspect has been formally charged with second-degree murder and arson involving a reckless disregard for human life. The accused has been detained in custody and is scheduled to appear in court in Iqaluit on October 21.
