“Canada-Negotiating Trade Deals to Reduce U.S. Dependency”

Must read

Canada’s trade negotiations with the U.S. are progressing positively, according to Industry Minister Mélanie Joly. Canadian companies are adjusting their strategies to reduce dependency on American trade. Joly shared insights from Prime Minister Mark Carney’s recent meeting with President Donald Trump, emphasizing the importance of direct engagement with the deal-maker in chief.

While no final agreement has been reached, discussions are moving in the right direction. Efforts are underway to secure a tariff deal with the U.S., with a focus on sectors like steel, aluminum, and energy. Additionally, negotiations are exploring an auto agreement and addressing tariffs affecting the forestry sector.

To diversify their markets and reduce reliance on U.S. trade, Canadian companies are increasing exports to Europe. Notably, Aluminerie Alouette, an aluminum manufacturer from Quebec, significantly boosted its exports to Europe in recent quarters, showcasing the effectiveness of market diversification.

Algoma Steel CEO, Michael Garcia, highlighted the challenges posed by the 50% tariff imposed by Trump, limiting their access to the U.S. market. Lower tariffs could potentially allow Canadian steel industries to regain competitiveness and access previously lost business opportunities.

Looking ahead, Algoma Steel aims to play a pivotal role in Canada’s steel industry, supplying materials for defense, infrastructure, and energy projects. The company sees growth opportunities within Canada as the government promotes its “Buy Canadian” policy.

In another development, New Brunswick is weighing potential retaliation measures following Trump’s announcement of new tariffs on softwood lumber and finished wood products. Premier Susan Holt expressed concerns over the economic impact of these tariffs and emphasized the need for progress in trade negotiations to alleviate the strain on the province’s economy.
