YouTube TV subscribers are no longer able to access Disney-owned channels like ABC and ESPN following a failed negotiation for a new content distribution agreement. Other disappeared channels from Google’s paid TV service include Disney Channel, FX, and Nat Geo.
In a recent blog post, Google’s TV platform announced that Disney had carried out its threat to suspend content during the negotiation impasse. This breakdown in agreement could impact the coverage of upcoming college football, NBA, NFL, and NHL games.
YouTube stands as the leading internet TV provider in the United States with over nine million subscribers, followed by Disney-owned Hulu with roughly half that number. Viewers have started noticing the dispute due to warnings displayed on their screens.
According to YouTube, Disney’s blackout threat was a negotiating strategy aimed at securing higher fees from subscribers. YouTube mentioned that Disney’s move also serves to promote its own streaming services like Hulu + Live TV and Fubo.
Expressing disappointment over the situation, YouTube urged Disney to engage in constructive dialogue to restore their networks to YouTube TV. As a gesture, YouTube announced a $20 credit for subscribers if Disney content remains unavailable for an extended period. The base subscription for YouTube TV is priced at $82.99 per month.
Disney, on the other hand, accused YouTube TV of not paying fair rates for their channels and depriving subscribers of valued content, especially during critical sports events. Disney highlighted Google’s significant market dominance and alleged anti-competitive behavior in negotiations, emphasizing a commitment to resolving the situation promptly.
