Sunwing Vacations has decided to prolong and expand the halt of its operations in Cuba due to the ongoing disruption in oil supplies to the island. The suspension of operations for all of Sunwing Vacations Group in Cuba has been extended from June 20 to Oct. 9. Flights to Varadero and Cayo Coco during the summer season have also been suspended, with services expected to resume on Oct. 10. Additionally, services to Holguin, Santa Clara, Cayo Largo, and Cienfuegos will restart on Oct. 25. The company, owned by WestJet Group, will keep a close watch on the situation and provide updates accordingly.
Sunwing assured that affected customers will be offered alternative options. Although flights to Cuba were initially suspended by major Canadian airlines in February due to fuel shortages, trips to popular vacation spots like Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos, Punta Cana, and Montego Bay are still available. This decision was influenced by U.S. President Donald Trump’s actions against Venezuela, which impacted Cuba’s oil supply chain, leading to severe consequences for the Cuban population, including countrywide blackouts and escalating prices of essential goods.
