“Andrew Knack Leads Edmonton Mayoral Race, But Nearly Half of Voters Undecided”

Must read

New polling data indicates that Andrew Knack is currently leading the race for Edmonton’s next mayor among decided and leaning voters. However, nearly half of the surveyed voters remain undecided.

The CBC News poll, carried out by Janet Brown Opinion Research, shows that Knack and Tim Cartmell are the top contenders in terms of name recognition and voter intention. Among those who have made up their minds or are leaning towards a candidate, 41% expressed support for Knack, while 21% favored Cartmell.

Nevertheless, a significant 46% of respondents are still unsure about their choice. The survey, which involved 1,000 Edmonton residents through the Trend Research Online Panel, took place from October 1 to 8.

Pollster Janet Brown noted that the high number of undecided voters so close to the election, especially in a race without an incumbent, is unusual. She suggested that the current political climate, marked by issues like Canada-U.S. relations and the Alberta teachers’ strike, might be contributing to voter indecision.

Political analyst Najib Jutt pointed out that many undecided voters may opt not to vote at all, citing a perceived lack of fresh faces among the candidates. The roster includes established figures like Knack, Cartmell, Michael Walters, Tony Caterina, and Rahim Jaffer.

According to Brendan Boyd, an associate professor of political science at MacEwan University, Edmontonians seem to be seeking change but are uncertain about where to find it. With a considerable number of undecided voters, the election outcome remains unpredictable.

While Andrew Knack and Tim Cartmell enjoy substantial support, other candidates like Omar Mohammad and Michael Walters trail behind. Jaffer and Caterina garnered 7% and 6% of decided or leaning voters, respectively. The remaining candidates each received 1% support or less.

Analysts believe that Knack’s focus on progressive issues has resonated with voters, positioning him as the leading progressive choice. As the election draws near, the key to victory may lie in mobilizing voter turnout through canvassing efforts.

With just days left until the election and early voting already underway, the candidates face the challenge of energizing their supporters to secure victory. The race remains fluid, with potential shifts in support leading up to election day.
