A bodybuilder from Sarnia, Ontario, aged 62, has secured a spot in next year’s North American championships after placing third at the Canadian Physique Alliance’s National Pro Qualifier in the men’s bodybuilding masters 60-plus category. Bernie Mockler, who narrowly missed winning his pro card in August, expressed satisfaction with his recent achievement, considering it a significant step toward his ultimate goal.
The pro card, awarded by the International Fitness and Bodybuilding Federation (IFBB), bestows professional status upon bodybuilders, enabling them to compete in elite-level events. Mockler, in his pursuit of the card, must not only triumph in his category but also outperform winners from other divisions. To earn another shot at the pro card, he had to participate in the recent qualifier, a challenging task according to his coach, Tim Love.
Mockler, who has maintained consistent dedication over 40 years, has received praise for his relentless pursuit of success. His training regimen includes daily cardio sessions for fat loss, multiple meals throughout the day, and weight workouts in the evening. Apart from his bodybuilding endeavors, Mockler serves as a nurse at a correctional facility, utilizing his expertise in diet and exercise to establish positive relationships with inmates, fostering mutual respect and guidance.
Looking ahead to the upcoming competition, Mockler aims to add 10 pounds of muscle over the next several months through off-season mass building before transitioning to a rigorous four-month pre-contest conditioning phase. Despite his demanding schedule, Mockler acknowledges the importance of rest, emphasizing the need to prioritize sleep following the recent event.
Mockler’s commitment to his fitness journey and professional aspirations serves as an inspiration to many, showcasing that age is merely a number.
