The men’s alpine ski team of Canada has been steadily progressing over recent seasons, clinching world championship titles and medals, achieving podium finishes in World Cup events, and triumphing in the renowned Kitzbuhel downhill race. According to John Kucera, head coach of the men’s alpine team, these accomplishments have set the stage for even greater success with the upcoming Winter Olympic Games in Italy on the horizon. Kucera emphasized the team’s pursuit of podium performances, citing their past successes in various competitions, including world championships and World Cup events.
The resurgence of the Canadian men’s alpine ski program has been driven by a trio of talented skiers – Jack Crawford, Cam Alexander, and Jeff Read – who have consistently excelled, earning podium placements in recent seasons. Crawford, in particular, has had a remarkable journey, securing Olympic bronze in 2022, followed by a silver in a super-G event, then becoming a world champion in super-G and triumphing in the Kitzbuhel downhill race in the subsequent seasons.
Alexander, another standout skier from North Vancouver, B.C., has also made significant contributions to the team, with notable achievements such as a world championship bronze and multiple World Cup podium finishes. Despite a setback due to a knee injury, Alexander remains optimistic about his return to competition at the upcoming World Cup event in Copper Mountain, Colo.
Read, whose father was a member of the famed “Crazy Canucks” ski team, has carved his own path to success, earning a silver medal in the super-G event at Kvitfjell. The team spirit and competitive drive among the skiers have created a motivated atmosphere, reminiscent of past Canadian ski teams.
Looking ahead to the 2026 Winter Olympics in Bormio, Italy, the Canadians are gearing up for the challenges posed by the treacherous downhill slopes. While past successes on similar terrains provide confidence, the team remains aware of the unpredictable nature of alpine skiing competitions. With a focus on podium finishes, the Canadian team, under Kucera’s guidance, aims to maintain a strong presence in both World Cup events and future Olympic Games.
As the team prepares for the upcoming season and the Olympic Games, the skiers are determined to push their limits and strive for excellence on the global stage. With a blend of experience, talent, and determination, the Canadian men’s alpine ski team is poised for an exciting and competitive season ahead.
