Must read

The inauguration of Winnipeg’s Nigerian Muslim community’s inaugural mosque and resource center at 500 Dovercourt Dr. was a significant milestone for Titi Tijani, who described it as the realization of a long-held aspiration.

The newly opened Al-Haqq Masjid in Winnipeg’s Whyte Ridge neighborhood is the foremost mosque in Manitoba established by and for the Nigerian Muslim populace, with “Al-Haqq” signifying “truth” in Arabic.

Funded entirely by the community via the Al-Haqq Prayer Group of Canada Inc., the mosque marks a pivotal moment for the Nigerian Muslim community’s growth and presence in Manitoba.

Tijani recalled the humble beginnings of the Nigerian Muslim community in Manitoba, where a small group initiated a prayer group in her residence due to the absence of a dedicated mosque.

The grand opening ceremony witnessed a full house of worshippers, underscoring the substantial growth the community has experienced in recent years.

The mosque aims to be inclusive, welcoming individuals of all faiths, and offering diverse community programs, educational initiatives, and resources to promote understanding of Islam.

Imam Yunusa Salami, the spiritual leader of the mosque, highlighted the significance of the new mosque in accommodating the burgeoning Muslim population in Manitoba, expressing joy at seeing the dream materialize.

The Al-Haqq Prayer Group of Canada set a fundraising target of $1.5 million for the mosque construction, with all contributions sourced from community members, reflecting the collective commitment to the project.

The elation and sense of achievement were palpable among the community members as they marked the realization of their long-cherished dream.
