ABC has given the green light to a new spinoff of the popular medical drama, “Grey’s Anatomy,” set in the rugged terrain of West Texas. The untitled series is set to debut in the 2026-2027 season with a “straight to series order,” bypassing the traditional pilot episode.
The show will focus on a team at a rural medical center in West Texas, described as the last hope for medical care before vast stretches of wilderness. Fans have mixed reactions to the Texas setting, speculating on possible connections to the original series, which saw characters scattered across different locations worldwide.
While some question the choice of setting, others welcome the change from the original Seattle backdrop. The new series will feature the creative talents of Shonda Rhimes, the mastermind behind “Grey’s Anatomy,” who will serve as co-creator and executive producer. Ellen Pompeo, the longest-running star of the original show, will also be an executive producer for the spinoff.
Details about how closely the new series will tie into “Grey’s Anatomy” or if familiar faces will make appearances remain undisclosed. The production, led by Shondaland and 20th Television, marks the fourth spinoff of “Grey’s Anatomy,” following the success of “Private Practice,” “Station 19,” and “Grey’s Anatomy: B-Team.”
