Eric Dane, a renowned actor famous for his roles in “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Euphoria,” and later a staunch advocate for ALS awareness, passed away at the age of 53. His representatives confirmed that Dane succumbed to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, less than a year after publicly revealing his diagnosis.
In a statement, his representatives mentioned that Dane spent his final days surrounded by close friends, his loving wife, and their two daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were his world. Throughout his battle with ALS, Dane passionately championed awareness and research efforts, aiming to support others facing similar challenges. He will be profoundly missed but fondly remembered. Dane deeply appreciated his fans and the overwhelming love and support he received.
Upon Dane’s passing, his Hollywood colleagues and co-stars expressed their heartfelt condolences, highlighting his warmth, humor, and mischievous charm on set. Alyssa Milano, who acted alongside Dane in the drama “Charmed,” reminisced about his sharp wit and infectious humor. Patrick Dempsey praised Dane’s fun-loving nature and easygoing personality on the set of “Grey’s Anatomy,” while Kim Raver fondly recalled his comedic timing and mischievous glint in his eye.
Notably, Dane’s breakthrough role came as Dr. Mark Sloan, also known as McSteamy, in “Grey’s Anatomy.” He also portrayed Cal Jacobs in the provocative series “Euphoria” until his passing. Additionally, Dane starred in the TNT drama “The Last Ship” as Captain Tom Chandler. Despite his professional success, Dane faced personal challenges, including battling depression in 2017.
In April 2025, Dane revealed his ALS diagnosis and subsequently became an advocate for ALS awareness. Recognized for his dedication, he received the advocate of the year award from the ALS Network in September 2025. A memoir by Dane titled “Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments,” scheduled for release this year, will reflect on pivotal moments in his life, including his career milestones, family life, and ALS diagnosis.
Eric Dane is survived by his wife, actor Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie Beatrice and Georgia Geraldine. Despite their separation in 2017 and subsequent divorce filing by Gayheart in 2018, they maintained a complex relationship, living separately and dating other people. Gayheart, in a personal essay, shared insights into their evolving relationship dynamics amidst Dane’s health struggles, emphasizing the profound impact of their journey together.
