BC Conservative MLA Resigns, Calls for Leader’s Departure

Must read

Penticton-Summerland MLA Amelia Boultbee has resigned from the B.C. Conservative caucus and has demanded the party’s leader step down.

During a press conference held on the steps of the legislature on Monday morning, Boultbee expressed her reasons for leaving, citing what she described as John Rustad’s ineffective leadership. She emphasized, “I have observed the disintegration of John Rustad’s leadership.”

Boultbee also disclosed that Rustad had told her to leave if she was dissatisfied, and she has chosen to accept that offer. Furthermore, she urged Rustad to step down, stating, “As long as John Rustad remains at the helm of the Conservative Party of B.C., he is essentially paving the way for the NDP to triumph in the upcoming election.”

In response, Rustad accused Boultbee of divulging confidential information from the caucus to the media. He asserted, “She was disclosing everything to everyone, and clearly, such leaks cannot persist.”

Last week, Rustad admitted to conducting searches on the phones of his MLAs to uncover the individual responsible for leaking private details from a caucus meeting. Initially, he claimed to have found nothing alarming during the search.

Disputing the accusations of leaking information, Boultbee denied the claims during an interview with CBC’s Radio West, labeling them as “outright falsehoods.” She warned that if Rustad continues to propagate these allegations, she will take legal action against him.

Rustad raised concerns about Boultbee’s positions on various matters and alluded to her well-being in interactions with the media. He mentioned, “Regarding Amelia’s well-being, I have observed instances where she appears distressed. Staff members have indicated her state of confusion, which raised some concerns for me. She has encountered challenges in the past.”

Boultbee disclosed that she had informed Rustad several months earlier about her struggles with mental health, particularly due to her involvement in a distressing child abuse case while serving as the party’s critic for the Ministry of Children and Family Development. She criticized Rustad for attempting to exploit her personal challenges, highlighting his leadership qualities in a negative light.

Conservative MLA Brennan Day condemned Rustad’s comments, expressing on social media, “To weaponize or diminish someone’s health condition, whether mental or otherwise, is detrimental to those already enduring stigma silently.”

During the morning press conference, Boultbee indicated her willingness to rejoin the Conservative Party under new leadership. She criticized Rustad for denying his MLAs the opportunity to voice their opinions on his leadership.

Despite surviving a leadership review in September with nearly 71% support, Rustad expelled Sturko from his caucus on the same day, accusing her of undermining his leadership.

The departure of Penticton-Summerland MLA Amelia Boultbee from the B.C. Conservative caucus marks the loss of five MLAs since the last election. Following Boultbee’s exit, Rustad commented on her health concerns, triggering a chain of events resulting in the party’s fragmentation.

Sturko criticized Rustad for cultivating mistrust among his MLAs, attributing the party’s division to his leadership style. She emphasized, “By scrutinizing cellphones and indiscriminately accusing individuals of leaking information, the leadership failure lies squarely with him.”

Rustad initially professed a commitment to free speech and non-coercion in voting practices but reneged on this pledge during the fall session by instructing his MLAs to abstain from voting on an NDP motion condemning a Christian lobby group.

SOGI, which stands for sexual orientation and gender identity, pertains to educational resources intended to foster inclusivity in classrooms. Rustad indicated that Boultbee had expressed discomfort with the party’s stance on parental rights and the necessary adjustments related to SOGI materials.

The internal discord within the B.C. Conservative party has hindered its capacity to hold the NDP accountable, according to Allie Blades, a political strategist with Framepoint Public Affairs. Blades remarked, “While the MLAs are effectively challenging the NDP, the leader’s focus on these avoidable issues has diverted attention from their essential work.”

Rustad maintains that the party’s singular objective is to bring down the NDP government, emphasizing a unified direction despite the ongoing internal conflicts.
