Brad Spence was taken aback when he arrived at the BHP Jansen Discovery Lodge, a potash mine site in Saskatchewan, and was greeted with a warm hug by a young woman he had helped find a job. In his role as the director of training and employment at George Gordon Developments Limited, Spence has assisted numerous individuals in securing employment opportunities.
For his remarkable efforts, Spence was honored with a Respect award at the inaugural Saskatchewan Okimaw awards ceremony held on September 12, 2025, in Regina, which aims to recognize Indigenous male leaders. Recalling a poignant moment, Spence shared how the woman, in tears, expressed her gratitude for enabling her to secure a job at the mining site, which ultimately allowed her to purchase a car and travel with her children.
Originating in Alberta, the Okimaw awards were brought to Saskatchewan this year by Chelsa Racette. “Okimaw” is a Plains Cree term meaning chief or leader. Racette emphasized that the awards celebrate and acknowledge Indigenous men across Saskatchewan for their contributions in various fields, including the 7 Sacred Teachings, entertainment, creative arts, and justice.
Racette praised Spence for his inclusive and compassionate approach, describing him as someone who uplifts others, strengthens the community, and embodies gratitude for life. Despite feeling uncertain about his chances of winning the award when he learned of his nomination, Spence expressed humility and self-doubt, comparing himself to other highly accomplished individuals on the list.
Having initially pursued a career in the music industry, working with bands globally in various capacities, Spence eventually returned to Saskatchewan, where he pursued studies in psychology and Indian studies. These experiences led him to his current role of assisting individuals, including those facing barriers such as lack of identification or skills, in finding employment opportunities.
Reflecting on his leadership role, Spence emphasized the importance of integrity, responsibility, and being available beyond regular working hours to support others. He views his role as guiding individuals towards personal growth and progress, underscoring the significance of listening and striving to be the best version of oneself.
In Spence’s view, leadership involves demonstrating resilience, defying societal stereotypes, and setting a positive example for future generations. He believes that by showcasing excellence and resilience, individuals can inspire and empower others, especially the youth who look up to them.
