MLA-elect Kevin Russell expressed his gratitude for winning the Miramichi West seat for the New Brunswick Progressive Conservatives in the recent election. Former mayor of Miramichi River Valley, Russell secured victory over Liberal candidate Hannah Fulton Johnston by a margin of close to 1,000 votes in the extensive riding encompassing Doaktown, Boiestown, Blackville, Renous, and Sunny Corner.

Reflecting on his decision to run, Russell emphasized his lifelong commitment to assisting others. He mentioned that the opportunity to run arose, prompting him to consider how he could contribute to addressing various needs within the community, spanning from healthcare and housing to job opportunities and infrastructure.

During his campaign, Russell encountered prevalent concerns among residents, ranging from healthcare accessibility to housing conditions and employment opportunities. Notably, he highlighted instances where individuals had to endure lengthy waits for essential medical appointments, emphasizing the urgency for improved healthcare services.

Having traveled approximately 9,000 kilometers campaigning over the past six weeks, Russell engaged with constituents to understand and address their diverse issues and priorities. He underscored his commitment to addressing each concern raised by residents at every level to ensure effective representation.

Following the election, local voters shared their key concerns with a CBC News team. Residents in Blackville, such as Joy Walls, voiced worries regarding grocery prices and healthcare quality. Similarly, Alvin Harris from Renous emphasized the need for enhanced road infrastructure, citing specific hazardous areas requiring immediate attention.

In neighboring Doaktown, Gilbert Thibodeau expressed disappointment over the prolonged absence of an MLA and underscored the critical need for improved healthcare access. Meanwhile, Kim Demerchant highlighted the declining state of the healthcare system, advocating for higher minimum wages to alleviate financial burdens.

The post-election feedback from constituents underscores the pressing need for collaborative efforts to address critical issues such as healthcare, infrastructure, and economic stability in Miramichi West.
