“Mexican President Assaulted in Public Encounter”

Must read

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Wednesday that she had lodged a formal complaint against an individual who inappropriately touched and attempted to kiss her while she was interacting with the public. The incident, which was captured in a viral video, was condemned by Sheinbaum during her regular morning press briefing as a criminal act. She emphasized that incidents like this are not unique to her, highlighting the challenges faced by women in Mexico.

The video of the incident quickly circulated online before being removed by some accounts, shedding light on the prevalent issue of women’s safety in a country where machismo and gender-based violence are deeply ingrained. Concerns were also raised regarding Sheinbaum’s security arrangements, as she, like her predecessor, prefers minimal security and direct interaction with the public.

Sheinbaum, who was walking from Mexico’s National Palace to the Ministry of Education at the time of the incident, was approached by a man who touched her inappropriately and attempted to kiss her. She managed to push him away before a member of her staff intervened. The man was later reported to have been arrested by Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada.

In response to the publication of images depicting the incident by a Mexican newspaper, Sheinbaum criticized the act as a form of “re-victimization” and demanded an apology from the publication, stating that the use of such images constitutes a crime. The Women’s Ministry, established under Sheinbaum’s administration, issued a statement urging women to report violence while requesting media outlets to avoid sharing content that compromises women’s integrity.

Despite criticisms from feminist activists regarding the government’s handling of violence against women, Sheinbaum remains committed to addressing these issues. The incident involving Sheinbaum has reignited discussions on the national stage regarding violence against women, underscoring the pervasive nature of such acts.

The incident occurred on the same day Sheinbaum met with the widow of a mayor from Michoacán state who was assassinated in public. The assassination of the mayor, who had been vocal in criticizing the government’s response to organized crime, sparked national outrage and led to protests. The mayor’s widow, Grecia Quiroz, has agreed to take over her husband’s position and is scheduled to be sworn in.

In the wake of the assassination, authorities have apprehended two suspects and have pledged to continue their investigation into the matter. Carlos Bautista, leader of the Independent Hat Movement to which the slain mayor belonged, mentioned that the new mayor will be provided with enhanced security measures.
