Expressing her pride as a Korean filmmaker, Kang, a Toronto native, shared her excitement about the audience’s interest in the Korean narrative and characters of the film. The story follows the K-pop girl trio Huntrix, who lead double lives as demon hunters while navigating their superstardom. The film’s breakout hit song, “Golden,” performed by EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami, reached the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The original musical film received critical acclaim and numerous accolades, including wins for best animated feature and best song at the Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globes. It also received two Oscar nominations. Additionally, “Golden” secured a Grammy for best song written for visual media, marking the first Grammy ever awarded to a K-Pop track.

Netflix reported record-breaking viewership numbers for the movie, with over 482 million views in a six-month period and 32 million views for its lyric videos by January 2026. The film’s soundtrack continues to gain global popularity. Appelhans emphasized the importance of a clear creative direction for the sequel, highlighting the need to create a meaningful and engaging story that resonates with both the creators and the audience.
