Ontario Cracks Down on Ticket Scalpers

Must read

The Ontario government has initiated a crackdown on ticket scalpers and resale platforms to ensure compliance with recently introduced regulations that restrict the resale price of tickets to face value. Despite this, some ticketing platforms continue to openly offer tickets at inflated prices.

According to Minister of Public and Business Service Delivery and Procurement Stephen Crawford, inspections are currently being conducted following letters sent out to resellers last week. The crackdown targets both ticket brokers and major companies like StubHub and SeatGeek operating in the secondary market.

The regulation, part of Ontario’s provincial budget, prohibits the selling of tickets above their original purchase price. As a result, FIFA has removed resale World Cup tickets for upcoming Toronto games, while Ticketmaster has adjusted its platform to prevent listings above face value.

Enforcement efforts this week may involve phone calls, requests for records, site visits, and potential fines or charges for violations. Customers can report concerns about possible infractions to Consumer Protection Ontario, with fines for violations ranging from $3,000 to $250,000.

Despite the enforcement actions, some companies are still selling tickets above face value. StubHub and SeatGeek, for instance, have been found listing tickets at significantly higher prices than their face value counterparts on Ticketmaster. While these platforms claim to be working towards compliance, discrepancies remain in their pricing practices.

Amidst these developments, Minister Crawford emphasizes the importance of companies swiftly adhering to the regulations. However, challenges in implementing the price cap for older listings and uncertainties regarding compliance details have been raised by industry insiders, highlighting the need for clearer guidelines and swift enforcement.

While concerns about the black market persist, experts believe that the new regulations will help curb price gouging in the ticket resale market, reshaping consumer expectations and supporting fairer practices in ticket sales.
