In the wake of a series of violent events, the Thunder Bay Police Service (TBPS) is emphasizing its commitment to public safety. Police chief Darcy Fleury and acting inspector Chris Carlucci conducted a media briefing at the police station on Wednesday morning to address recent incidents, including a recent homicide on Edward Street North.
Carlucci provided updates on various cases, starting with the arrest of a 13-year-old for conspiracy to commit murder in connection with an online threat of a potential school attack. Collaborating with international agencies like the FBI and Interpol, TBPS also charged the youth with counseling to commit an offense.
Another incident involved the assault of an 85-year-old man at Red River Road and Clarkson Avenue, where a suspect was arrested and charged with attempted murder. Additionally, a homicide on Dawson Road led to the arrest of a suspect for second-degree murder.
In response to a firearms-related incident on May and Bethune Streets, a suspect was released after initial arrest, but a 48-year-old man was later arrested for attempted murder using a firearm. Carlucci acknowledged the community’s concerns about these events and reiterated the police’s dedication to ensuring the safety of the public.
Addressing reports of the outlaw motorcycle gang Satan’s Choice potentially resurfacing in Thunder Bay, Carlucci confirmed that while the police are vigilant about the group’s history in the city, there have been no confirmed sightings in the region.
Despite Thunder Bay having high homicide and violent crime rates per capita, as per Statistics Canada, Carlucci emphasized the importance of community members reporting crimes and assisting investigations. Meanwhile, Police Chief Fleury is hosting a community information session at Mary JL Black Library to engage with the public and address community concerns.
Fleury expressed confidence in the police’s efforts, noting the resolution of recent cases and the ongoing commitment to addressing community issues.
