A massive demonstration in Mexico City escalated into violence on Saturday as protesters clashed with riot police outside the National Palace amid concerns about insecurity and government corruption. Thousands of demonstrators, primarily led by Generation Z youth groups, marched from the Angel of Independence monument to the Zocalo, where the National Palace is situated—serving as the residence and workspace of President Claudia Sheinbaum.
Tensions erupted when masked protesters dismantled metal barriers safeguarding the palace, prompting law enforcement to retaliate with tear gas and smoke bombs. Demonstrators engaged in physical altercations with the police, pushing and kicking fences while some threw stones at the officers.
The protest aimed at highlighting specific instances of violence, such as the assassination of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo, drew citizens waving Mexican flags to express their discontent with the deteriorating security situation and governmental corruption. Andres Massa, a 29-year-old business consultant, emphasized the need for enhanced security, carrying a pirate skull flag that has become emblematic of Gen Z protests globally.
Gen Z individuals, born between the late 1990s and early 2010s, have been organizing protests around the world this year to address issues like inequality, democratic regression, and corruption. Notably, significant Gen Z protests in Nepal in September resulted in the prime minister’s resignation following a social media ban. In Mexico, many young people are frustrated with systemic problems such as corruption and the lack of accountability for violent crimes.
Despite recent high-profile murders, including the assassination of Mayor Manzo, Sheinbaum maintains high approval ratings. In the days leading up to the protest, Sheinbaum accused right-wing parties of attempting to infiltrate the Gen Z movement and using social media bots to boost attendance.
While some Gen Z influencers distanced themselves from the protest, elder figures like former president Vicente Fox and Mexican billionaire Ricardo Salinas Pliego expressed support for the demonstrations. The protest attracted participants from various age groups, with supporters of Mayor Manzo donning straw hats emblematic of his political movement.
