“Dingwall Guitars: From Humble Beginnings to Global Renown”

Must read

CBC Saskatchewan’s Creator Network provides a platform for young digital storytellers from various backgrounds to create original video content for CBC, sharing stories from their unique perspectives. Dingwall Guitars, a renowned name in electric guitars and basses worldwide, was established in Saskatoon in the 1980s by Sheldon Dingwall, who remains the company’s CEO.

Dingwall shared that over the past 40 years, the company has been crafting electric bass guitars in Saskatoon, where it all began. The city holds significance as the birthplace of the Canadian electric guitar industry, making it a special location for the company’s operations.

The inspiration behind Dingwall’s venture into guitar making stemmed from his inability to afford a quality instrument as a young musician. With the guidance of mentors, including an uncle who was a hobbyist luthier and Glenn McDougall of Fury Guitars, Dingwall embarked on building his first three electric guitars.

Following the completion of his initial guitar projects, Dingwall and his band embarked on a tour, providing the perfect opportunity to test and refine his handmade designs. The guitars underwent continuous modifications during the tour, with Dingwall cherishing the experience of hearing and feeling his creations for the first time.

Subsequently, Dingwall transitioned to retailing his guitars at a local music store in Saskatoon, marking the beginning of his venture into commercial guitar production. As demand grew, the company expanded its offerings to include bass guitars with distinctive fanned-frets, attracting a niche market of engineers focused on performance and design over trends.

Despite initial challenges and a period of financial struggle, Dingwall Guitars began to gain traction and expand its reach. However, a major setback struck on October 8, 1996 when a fire razed the Uncle Ed’s building in Saskatoon, where the company’s instruments were stored and manufactured.

The devastating fire posed a significant hurdle for Dingwall, who found solace in the safety of his family amidst the loss. Grateful for the support received from the community, Dingwall embarked on the journey of rebuilding his business, spurred by the generosity of friends who organized a benefit concert to aid in the recovery process.

The resilience and assistance from others propelled Dingwall to persevere, leading to the company’s growth and establishment as one of Canada’s top guitar makers. Presently, Dingwall Guitars boasts a range of high-end bass guitar models, with several crafted at the Saskatoon headquarters and others produced in China with final assembly in Canada.

The company’s reputation has attracted notable musicians like Leland Sklar, John Taylor, and Amos Heller, among others, who endorse Dingwall guitars and basses. Dingwall reflects on his journey with gratitude, highlighting the joy of contributing to the music industry and spreading positivity through his creations.
