“Epic Games Slashes 1,000 Jobs Due to Fortnite Decline”

Must read

Epic Games has announced a workforce reduction of over 1,000 employees due to a decline in player engagement with Fortnite. This decision comes as part of cost-saving measures that aim to cut $500 million US through the reduction of contract and marketing expenses, as well as the elimination of certain job positions. CEO Tim Sweeney addressed the company’s financial situation, stating that the need for significant cuts is essential to maintain the company’s financial stability.

Despite the initial resilience of popular titles like Fortnite during the COVID-19 pandemic, the overall engagement in the gaming industry has started to decrease, particularly for live-service games that heavily rely on continuous and expensive content updates to retain players. Sweeney acknowledged the challenges faced in delivering consistent gaming experiences, attributing the current market conditions to be the most severe since the company’s establishment in 1991.

It was clarified that the recent layoffs were not connected to artificial intelligence concerns amid industry apprehensions about technology replacing human developers. Earlier this month, Epic Games increased the prices of Fortnite’s in-game currency, citing rising operational costs. The company’s previous major layoff occurred in September 2023, affecting around 16% of its workforce in a bid to enhance profitability.

While the exact percentage of employees impacted by the recent layoff announcement remains undisclosed, industry trends show a pattern of job cuts among gaming companies. Electronic Arts and Amazon have also downsized their workforce in recent times, with Electronic Arts reportedly laying off hundreds of workers and canceling a Titanfall project under development. Additionally, rising memory chip prices have further compounded challenges in the gaming sector, with increased demand from AI data centers leading to higher semiconductor costs and subsequent price hikes for gaming consoles.
