“NHL Expansion Plans Unlikely to Proceed, Bettman Confirms”

Must read

Expansion plans for the NHL were not on the agenda during the recent board of governors meeting, as confirmed by Commissioner Gary Bettman. The league has maintained its 32-team structure since Seattle joined in 2021, with interest from various groups eyeing potential franchises in cities like Atlanta and Houston. Despite ongoing interest, Bettman emphasized that no proposals have advanced to a significant enough stage to warrant immediate attention.

When asked about the possibility of discussing expansion at the next board meeting in December in Colorado Springs, Bettman indicated that decisions in this regard are not solely up to the NHL. He mentioned that the league would assess any incoming inquiries on a case-by-case basis before determining the appropriate course of action.

In addition to expansion talks, Bettman expressed concerns about the construction progress of the primary hockey arena in Milan for the upcoming Olympics, noting that the International Olympic Committee holds the ultimate responsibility for addressing any delays. While acknowledging constraints on the NHL’s involvement, Bettman expressed confidence in reassurances from the IOC and the International Ice Hockey Federation regarding the completion of the arena.

Regarding the NHL salary cap, Bettman debunked rumors suggesting a substantial increase to over $104 million US for the next season. He clarified that there have been no discussions or plans to alter the current salary cap structure, emphasizing that the league will adhere to the existing agreements.

The board meeting was described by Bettman as routine, focusing on essential updates and operations within the league, as well as initiatives to enhance international growth. Notable topics included updates on the state of the league, officiating, and efforts to expand the game globally. Bettman refrained from commenting on the sale process involving the Pittsburgh Penguins, while Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly anticipated bids from 18 North American cities and 10 European cities to host segments of the 2028 World Cup of Hockey.

Addressing speculation about his tenure, Bettman asserted his commitment to the NHL, stating that he has no immediate plans to step down and remains dedicated to his role for the foreseeable future.
